Setting Goals - A Lifetime of Goals

Setting Goals - A Lifetime of Goals

Life swiftly passes us by. In the blink of an eye we graduate from school, and suddenly find ourselves to be grandparents. How did we get here so quickly? This question usually leads to another - what have I accomplished in life?

We tend to measure ourselves by the things we've accomplished. Wouldn't it be great to get to the point where accomplishing your goals was a constant part of your life? Imagine the feeling of success as you talk to your great grandchildren about your life!

Sadly, we often think of goals and accomplishments in terms of money and careers. Of course we should consider these to be important and take the time to set goals for ourselves in this area, but let's consider other areas of ourselves that deserve development as well.

Do you have a secret desire to be an artist? What about that afghan you've always wanted to crochet, or the birdhouse you've wanted to paint? The pleasure these pursuits can bring are well worth the investment. Get out your goal setting gear and make the time to do it. You may want to include teaching a skill you already have to your child or grandchild as well.

Now, I know we all hate to admit it, but everyone has a personality flaw. Hey, you know who's grumpy until they've had a cup of coffee, and who it is that likes to carry the latest gossip! Yes, we can set some goals to improve our attitudes. Not only will you feel better about yourself, but the people around you will enjoy the changes as well. Lighten up, we could all stand to set a few "attitude" goals!

Friends and family require time and effort. It would be great if we all understood each other, and never had problems getting along. Unfortunately, it just isn't that way. Who do you need to spend more time getting to know and understand? Make a goal to do it! You'll be surprised at how much a little time will improve your relationships.

I'm surprised at the number of people I know who would secretly like to run a marathon. To me, it's pure craziness - especially when I look at the physical shape they are in. But goals always start with a dream. When a dream blossoms into passion, and you get busy doing something about it, you'd be surprised at where you could go. Physical fitness and health goals are very important in our lives. They'll extend our lifespan, and make the time we live more enjoyable.

The hectic lifestyles most of us lead leave us exhausted and worn out by the end of the day. It takes all of our energy just to keep up with the demands of our own family and career. How often we see something that sparks a thought to extend a helping hand to those in need, yet never find the time or energy! Sometimes we just have to make time. We have to make it a priority and goal to lay aside the things that are crying out for our attention, and give of ourselves to others. It will never be convenient.

Finally, we should make some goals just for pleasure. They say that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Of course we need to have fun - to de-stress and relax. How long has it been since you've set a goal to just do something you enjoy? Probably too long. Go for it! When you head back to work, you'll have a new sparkle in your eye and bounce in your step. You'll be ready to conquer the world.
